Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army, attended the ceremony for the launch of the book 'Army Commander’s Promise to the Nation' authored by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka RWP RSP VSV USP rcds psc. The event took place on 28 June 2024 at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre and HE the President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces graced the event as the Chief Guest.
The event commenced with the welcoming of the Chief Guest by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, together with the Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Commander of the Navy.
Hon. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene, Cabinet Ministers, State Ministers, Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Members of Parliament, General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera RSP USP ndu psc, Commander of the Navy, former Tri-Forces Commanders, Author's family members, Police Officials and Senior Officers participated in the ceremony.
The proceedings began with a welcome speech and it was followed by a book review by Dr. Richard de Zoyza, providing the audience with an insightful overview of the book's content. An introductory video was also displayed to enhance the audience's understanding of the military life and commitment of the author.
A particularly touching moment was the special speeches delivered by the author’s two daughters. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, then took the stage to share his thoughts and ceremonially handed over the first publication to the Chief Guest. A special memento was also presented to the Chief Guest, and copies of the book were distributed among the distinguished guests.
HE the President Ranil Wickremesinghe delivered the keynote speech, emphasizing the significance of the book and its contribution to the nation's understanding of military leadership and commitment. Then the event was enriched with the dancing events performed by the troupes of the Directorate of Army Band and Performing Arts.
Afterwards, Major General Srinath Rajapakshe (Retd) addressed the gathering, highlighting the author's past military career and the ceremony concluded with a thanking note.
