Army Chief Commends Remarkable Contributions of Retiring Chief of Staff

Major General W.H.K.S Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 03 June 2024, together with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a notable career of 35 years.

During the meeting, the Army Chief lauded the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure both during war against terrorism and post-war era. The Commander also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his dedicated family throughout his career.

In response, Major General W.H.K.S Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndu expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support given to him by the Army Chief. Toward the end of the interactions, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts to his family.

Here is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General W.H.K.S Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndu enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet to the Intake 30 on 26 July 1988. Upon successful completion of military training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 09 June 1990. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks over the span of his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 07 May 2021. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 06 June 2024 on reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointments of Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Sports Committee.

He held various appointments during his career, including Platoon Commander of the 6 Gajaba Regiment, Officer Commanding of the 6 Gajaba Regiment, Adjutant of the Army Training School, Operations and Training Officer of the 6 Gajaba Regiment, Scrutiny Officer of the Base Ordnance Depot (Maradana), General Staff Officer 2 (Training) of the Army Training School, Second-in-Command of the 3 Gajaba Regiment, Staff Officer 2 of the Quarter Master General's Branch, Army Headquarters, Overlooking Commanding Officer of the 4 Gajaba Regiment, Overlooking Commanding Officer of the 3 Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Staff Officer 2 (Finance) of Directorate of Personnel Administration, Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) of Directorate of Personnel Administration, Army Headquarters, Staff Officer 2 of Transit Camp - Anuradhapura, Security Coordinator of Ministry of Defence, Commanding Officer of the 8 Gajaba Regiment, Contingent Commander of the 19 Sri Lanka Battalion, United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officiating Commander of 522 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre of the Gajaba Regiment, Director of Directorate of Movement - Army Headquarters, General Officer Commanding of 52 Infantry Division, Minister (Military Advisor) of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations - New York, Commander of Security Forces (West), Colonel Commandant of the Military Intelligence Corps, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment.

The Senior Officer has been awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama medals in appreciation of his dedicated service rendered during his tenure in the Sri Lanka Army. He has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Platoon Commanders Tactics Course, Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course, Basic Parachute Training Course, Combat Air Assault Course, Pre-Commission Training Course – India, Young Officers’ Course – India, Junior Command Course - India, Senior Command Course - India, United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Contingent Commanders Course - Nepal, Comprehensive Crisis Management Course – Hawaii and Defence and Strategic Studies Course - China.
