Army Chief Commends Retiring Major General’s Notable Service

Major General M.W.T.C Mettananda USP ndc, Commander, Logistics Command in the Sri Lanka Army, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a notable career of 35 years, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 17 May 2024, together with his family members.

During the meeting, the Army Chief lauded the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in a variety of challenging roles throughout his tenure. The Army Chief particularly highlighted Senior Officer’s invaluable contributions during the war against terrorism and his continued commitment to duty in the post-war era, and also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his dedicated family throughout his career.

In response, Major General M.W.T.C Mettananda USP ndc expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support given to him by the Army Chief. Toward the end of the interactions, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts to his family.

Here is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General M.W.T.C Mettananda USP ndc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet to Intake 31 on 20 January 1989. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps on 05 October 1990. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks during his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 04 February 2022. The Senior Officer retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 26 May 2024, on reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointment of Commander, Logistics Command in the Sri Lanka Army.

He held various appointments during his career, including Platoon Commander at Combat Training School and Infantry Training Centre, Motor Transport Officer of Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Adjutant of 1 Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Staff Officer 3 (Administration and Logistics) at Headquarters - 22 Infantry Division, Staff Officer 2 (Insurance and Medical Scheme) at Directorate of Welfare, Psychological Operations Officer at Headquarters - 51 Infantry Division, Psychological Operations Officer at Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna, Staff Officer 2 (Administration and Quartering) at Headquarters Logistics Command, Officer Commanding of Army Farm, Kanthale, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) at Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) at Area Headquarters - Welioya, Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) at Headquarters - Task Force 8, Commandant of Army Physical Training School and Sector Commander, Sector 17, Operations Command - Colombo, Commanding Officer of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) at Defence Services Command and Staff College, Colonel (Administration and Quartering) at Security Force Headquarters (Kilinochchi), Logistics Commander of Sri Lanka Battalion, United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officiating Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps Trade School, Colonel (Administration and Quartering) at Headquarters 22 Infantry Division, Director of Directorate of Budget and Financial Management at Army Headquarters, Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps, Commander Forward Maintenance Area (East) and Commander of Logistics Command.

He has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Platoon Commanders Tactics Course, Civil-Military Operations Training Course, Psychological Operations Training Course, National Security and Strategic Studies Course, Officers Physical Training Course in India, Officers Advanced Course (Veterinary) in Pakistan, and United Nations Logistics Officers Course in Nepal. The Senior Officer also pursued several higher educational and non-military courses, such as Diploma in Psychology at the Institute of Psychological Studies and Advanced Certificate in Guidance and Counseling at Institute of Psychological Studies.
