‘Thuru Mithuru Nawa Ratak’ of SFHQ-Central Distributes Mini Tractors & Incentives among Farming Communities

A follow-up programme that goes hand in hand with the ‘Thuru Mithuru Nawaratak’ project, introduced by the Commander of the Army in order to encourage cultivation of food crops among all Army formations and farmers in adjoining villages got underway at the Security Force HQ - Central (SFHQ-Cen) at Diyatalawa on Saturday (18) following sponsorship extended recently by Commercial Bank to the Army HQ.

The project covering remote area-based farmers in 6 districts under the purview of the SFHQ-Cen saw two hand tractors, two mini cultivator tractors, agricultural accessories, spray machines, water pumps, seeds, etc made available through the coordination of the Directorate of Agriculture and Livestocks distributed on the occasion by the day's Chief Guest, Major General Keerthi Costa, Commander, Security Forces - Central. The value of the distributed stock of incentives exceeded Rs 5 million. The occasion witnessed a group of farmers, representative of 104 farmers in those six districts who could use those tractors on sharing basis symbolically receive those incentives during this ceremony.

At the same occasion, SFHQ-Central's Army battalions, Training schools and units which won in inter-unit 'cultivation competitions' were awarded incentives, such as seeds, agricultural accessories, etc in addition to two mini tractors, awarded to the Diyatalawa Army Farm facilitating it to be more effective. Representative Army Officers from all units received their awards from the day's Chief Guest.

It was just a few weeks ago, Commercial Bank, impressed with the Army's ongoing 'Thuru Mithuru Nawa Ratak’ project, launched by the Commander of the Army to encourage crop cultivation, conservation of environment and beautification of areas, adjoining Army formations, met Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) and extended the Bank's support and generosity to the project by way of gifting hand and mini tractors for distribution among Army units and neighbouring farmer communities who are unable to buy those machinery.

The Commander of the Army in keeping with HE the President's 'Saubhagye Dekma' policy vision instructed all island-wide Army formations to assist nearby farming communities in whatever the way possible for cultivation of food crops since poverty factor has largely deprived them of access or hiring of those agricultural machinery.
