‘National Drug Eradication Week’ & Release of Army-Held Lands Launched

HE the President Maithripala Sirisena, launching multifarious projects in Mullaittivu and Kilinochchi Districts this morning (21) declared the commencement of the Drug Eradication Week in National School, to be actively supported by Army personnel by way of distribution of literature and delivery of instructional assistance as agreed between the Army and authorities of the Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention and Ministry of Education. The main event got underway at Vidyananda Vidyalaya in Mullaittivu.

Around the same time, 59, 64 and 68 Division troops of the SFHQ - MLT as agreed upon kicked off the distribution of awareness leaflets on Drugs in 70 schools in the District where 18,168 students are studying as per directions of the Mullaittivu Commander.

Similarly, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army, honouring the commitment the Army has given to the Presidential directive, together with Major General Dushyantha Rajaguru, Commander, Security Forces – Mullaittivu (SF-MLT) on the same occasion, participating as a special invitee, delivered those land documents, related to the release of 1201.88 Army used state and private lands in Mullaittivu, Kilinochchi, Jaffna and Wanni Districts, including Udayarkattu, and three other Army farms.

HE the President after accepting those documents from the Commander of the Army handed them down to the Governors and District Secretaries afterwards in turn for onward implementation of the release.

The return of this acreage of land includes 972 acres of state land in Kilinochchi and 120 acres of state land in Mullaittivu where the Army has been running farms. Similarly, 46.11 acres of state land in Jaffna and the Wanni and 63.77 acres of private land in Jaffna and the Wanni were also released accordingly under this programme in Mullaittivu.

The programme that released the total of 1201.88 acreage, including Nachchikuda, Vellankulam and Udayarkattu Army farms was coordinated by the Security Force Headquarters – Mullaittivu.

The process to release northern and eastern lands, belonging to civilians and the state that bear no impact on national security needs began last year in earnest, following a Presidential directive. Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army promptly responded and instructed accordingly to abide by the Presidential directive with the objective of further promoting gestures of goodwill and reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) offered their maximum support for launch of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation’s ‘Earth Watchman’ mega tree planting drive that began in close coordination with the Kilinochchi faculty of the University of Jaffna.
