‘Ex-Mitra Shakthi - VI’ Set to Begin in Diyatalawa on Tuesday (26)

‘Exercise Mitra Shakthi - VI’, the two-week long military exercise, designed to bolster military relations further between the Indian Army and the Sri Lanka Army will begin on Tuesday (26) at Diyatalawa 1 Gemunu Watch (GW) camp premises with the participation of 120 Indian Army Jawans and an equal number of Sri Lankan Army personnel.

The joint annual Exercise aims to share knowledge on military tactics, experience, exchange of infantry technicalities, counter terrorism practices, long range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP), small group operations, effective employment of infantry weapons, simulated attacks on terrorist hideouts, suicide bombing, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), etc between both organizations.

Under the guidelines given by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, the Army Directorate of Infantry, headed by Major General Duminda Keppetiwalana, Director General Infantry had finalized all arrangements in this regard. Brigadier Kumar Jayapathirana, General Officer Commanding, 21 Division functions as Exercise Director ‘Mitra Shakthi - VI’ with several other supportive Officers.

The contingent of Indian Army personnel, led by Colonel Parthasarathy Roy, Colonel Sombit Gosh, Major Pujam Manhas and Major Rohith Kumar Tripathi who arrived in Sri Lanka this morning (25) was warmly received at the airport by Brigadier Kumar Jayapathirana, Exercise Director, together with a few Senior Officers.

Before they proceeded to Diyatalawa, a representative group of visiting Indian Army Officers made a bee-line to the IPKF memorial at Battaramulla and paid their tribute to fellow-Jawans who had laid their lives in Sri Lanka while fighting against LTTE terrorism in the latter part of 1980s.
