‘Army Commander's League-T 20’ Cricket Tournament Creates Inspiring Hopes for Future

The finals of the 2nd edition of the ‘Army Commander’s League-T 20’ cricket tournament that selects best of the best cricketers to the national pool in keeping with the ‘Live with COVID-19’ notion, suggested by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) got underway this afternoon (6) at Sri Lanka Army cricket ground at Dombagoda, adhering to strict health guidelines.

Today’s finals after playing over the course of a few days at Dombagoda, beginning 31 July, were waged between Super Fashion Northern Warriors, captained by Seekkuge Prasanna and Event TV Western Warriors captained by Thisara Perera.

Organized by the Army Cricket Committee, the tournament was vied by four teams, ‘Super Fashion-sponsored ‘Army Northern Warriors’, captained by the Army national player Seekkuge Prasanna, Batsman.com and Prima Stellaco-sponsored ‘Army Eastern Warriors’, captained by the Army national player Asela Gunaratne and DIMO Pvt Ltd-sponsored ‘Army Southern Warriors,’ captained by the Army national player Dinesh Chandimal and event TV sponsored Army Western Warriors,’ captained by the Army National player, Thisara Perera.

After very close tussles and convincing competitions, the Super Fashion Northern Warriorscaptained by the Army national player Seekkuge Prasanna and the Event TV Western Warriorscaptained by the Army National player Thisara Perera were selected for today’s finals at Dombagoda while inculcating confidence in everyone of the possibilities of conducting day-to-day activities, sticking to precise health safety measures.

Creating refreshing hopes for T-20 series, Super Fashion Northern Warriorscaptained by the Army national player,Seekkuge Prasanna emerged Champions pushing Event TV Western Warriors captained by the Army national player Thisara Perera to be the runners-up in the League.

‘Seekkuge Prasanna was hailed as the Man of the Series, Seekkuge Prasanna as the Best Bowler while the Shihan Fernando was adjudged the Man of the final Match. Upul Tharanga was rated as the Best Batsman of the series.

The brainchild behind the tournament’s realization, General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) graced the awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest, together with Major General Priyantha Perera, Chief of Staff and Chairman Sri Lanka Army Sports, Major General Wasantha Madola Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Sanjaya Wanasingha, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Cricket and Adjutant General, Principal Staff Officers, Major General Shiran Abeysekara, Vice Chairman and Coordinator of the Army Cricket, Mr Aravinda De Silva and Mr Sanath Jayasooriya former cricket captains of Sri Lanka, Mr Mohan De Silva, Secretary Sri Lanka Cricket and few more Senior Officers.

General Shavendra Silva awarded trophies and incentives to all achievers and mementoes to main sponsors of the tournament as the Chief Guest and congratulated them.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Engineers Cricket team who emerged as the Champions of Sri Lanka Army Inter Regiment Cricket Tournament 2020 were also given their trophy by the Army Chief.

Sri Lanka Army with its over 500 national level sports personnel as permanent employees and many more on a part-time basis is the biggest organization in the country with such resources. It has maintained a superb sporting record over the years bringing glory and honour to the country at the international level. Most importantly, 99 percent of the Army sports personnel come from rural villages.

Sticking to bio bubble concept and health guidelines, Senior Officers and a restricted group of cricket fans in the Army watched the finals.
