Woman Soldiers Take Their Aesthetic Skills for Public Display at National Art Gallery

Woman soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) for the first time in its Regimental history, display their aesthetic values for public judgement by holding their maiden Art Exhibition, ‘Sebaliya Ru Rata’ at the East Hall of the National Art Gallery, Colombo.

Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army attended the inaugural opening of the exhibition as the Chief Guest on Monday (24), together with a few more senior officers. The Art Exhibition is open to public during August 24-25 from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

The Chief Guest lit the traditional oil lamp, together with several senior officers present at the occasion and formally declared it open before he went round to have a closer look at each and every painting on display.

This Art Exhibition was initiated with the objective of showcasing hidden talents of lady officers and woman soldiers. More than 250 paintings are on display during the exhibition.

Major General Ubaya Medawela, Colonel Commandant, SLAWC who took initiatives to organize this exhibition welcomed the Commander of the Army on arrival.

Chief of Staff, Major General Jagath Dias, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Mahinda Ambanpola, Adjutant General, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Master General Ordnance, Major General Kamal Gunaratne, Quarter Master General, Major General R. Ratnasingham, together with several senior officers, officers, other rankers and a gathering of spouses and Seva Vanitha members attended the inauguration.

Towards the end of the brief inaugural ceremony, the Commander, appreciating the aesthetic skills of those contributors, awarded symbolic mementos and certificates to 38 participants and those who supported the conduct of the event amid applause.

Mr Pulasthi Ediriweera, President, Ceylon Society of Arts, Mr Aruna Keerthi, Secretary, Ceylon Society of Arts and Ms Prasadini Kalari, Member of Ceylon Society of Arts were among recipients who received appreciative gifts from the Commander of the Army.
