Wanni Troops Warm their 20th New Home, Built for Another Needy Family

The landmark warming ceremony of the 20th Wanni troops-built new house for another needy family residing in Mihinthale area got underway on Friday (28) during a simple ceremony, headed by Major General Dammika Jayasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni.

Mrs Nilanthi Liyanage, a philanthropist living in Singapore through personal contacts of Brigadier Anil Peiris, Commander, 212 Brigade who has been the heavyweight behind much-needed construction of new homes for needy Wanni civilians offered sponsorship for erection of this new home to one Mrs A.S Kumuduni in Makichchawa, Mihinthale with two children and both parents. The family was undergoing a series of hardships and economic difficulties as her husband has died.

Construction of this 20th house was undertaken by 7 (V) Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) troops of the 212 Brigade with the close supervision of the General Officer Commanding, 21 Division. The inaugural warming ceremony on Friday saw traditional house-warming rites and rituals being followed with the participation of relatives and well-wishers, including representatives of the donor. A parcel of essentials was also gifted to the family after the day’s Chief Guest, Major General Dammika Jayasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni, together with the beneficiaries entered the new home.

The construction of houses for underprivileged families in Wanni remote areas began a few years ago with the support of private donors with the blessings of respective Wanni Commanders to be in line with the civil-military cooperation projects, introduced by the Army HQ.
