Wanni Troops Busy Planting Hundreds of Coconut Saplings

Troops of the 12 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment of the 562 Infantry Brigade of the 56 Infantry Division under command to the Security Force Headquarters -Wanni (SFHQ-Wanni) giving a boost to the country's second earmarked “Coconut Triangle” in the North distributed 975 more coconut saplings among the civilians and farmers in Maravankulam on 23 November 2023.

In addition, 7 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops of the 563 Infantry Brigade distributed 750 coconut saplings in Kokeiya, Rambavitti, Nochchimutai, Parnatakallu, Velasihakulam and Arasamurippu areas during 25-27 November 2023. Similarly, 17 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment troops of the 562 Infantry Brigade as part of their nation-building tasks distributed 1000 saplings in Periyakadu area during 22 -23 November 2023.

This effort is part of a national plan to revive the coconut industry in the region and boost the livelihoods of local communities by establishing the country's second 'coconut triangle' in the Northern region. The first phase of the northern ‘Coconut Triangle’ was inaugurated earlier in Mullaittivu and the Wanni region one will be the second in the North.
