MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES and large groups of civilians in several northeast areas joined hands together to mark the 58th Independence Day (National Day) celebrations at regional levels on 04th February 2006.
Hundreds of members of the Armed Forces under the aegis of Major General W. U. B Edirisinghe, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni after the ceremonials at the Headquarters ground were over, attended a community work campaign (Shramadana) to clean up the Vavuniya Hospital wards and its premises. Members of the hospital staff too actively assisted troops in the Shramadana.
Among the highlights of the day's proceedings were the raising of the National Flag, Singing of the National anthem and a special address to the troops by the Wanni Commander during the ceremony. The day's proceedings also followed a separate tree planting campaign around Wanni Headquarters.
Meanwhile, Major General W. U. B Edirisinghe as the Chief Guest recently declared open the newly built library at Alagalle Vidyalaya, Vavuniya in the company of Mr S. Punchibandara, Assistant Education Director, Principal Mr Upul Chandrasekera, Government Officials and a host of other Senior Army Officers.
Children admitted to the school for the Grade One classes were also donated gift parcels containing school accessories and stationery on the occasion.
