Volunteer Force Inter Regiment Athletics Tournament Successfully Culminated

Inter Regiment Athletics Championship - 2024 of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) drew to a close on a grand scale on 28 August 2024 at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium. Major General W.P.A.D.W Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

The Chief Guest was accompanied with a traditional procession of Kandian dancers. The welcome speech was delivered by Major General W.G.P Sisira Kumara RSP, the Deputy Commandant, SLAVF, tracing SLAVF history and sports achievements while extending greetings to the guests and participants in games.

Outstanding athletes who represented each Army establishment under command to the Volunteer Force had been competing under track and field disciplines from 26 to 28 August 2024 under 24 events.

Private W.A.M.R Wijesooriya of 2 (Volunteer) of the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps placed a new record in 35:00.42 minutes in 10000 metres.

Subsequently, Dilhani Lekamge who threw a national record at Javelin Throw at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2023 in Bangkok and attended the Javelin Throw for Paris Olympic Games in 2024 was awarded with a financial award as a token of appreciation by the Chief Guest.

Major General K.A.W.N.H Bandaranayake USP, General Officer Command of 14 Infantry Division, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks who represented the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Mr. Jagath Gnanasiri Silva the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Athletics, other invited officials and sports delegates took part in this event.
