Visiting Southern Army Command Honours Fallen Indian Jawans at IPKF Memorial


Giving due respect to officers and soldiers of the Indian Army (IPKF) who served here, the visiting Lieutenant General Ashok Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India’s Southern Army Command, recalled memories of their service in Sri Lanka by placing a floral wreath at the IPKF memorial at Sri Jayawardanapura, Battaramulla on Wednesday (19).

Accompanied by Major General Sumedha Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - West, Lieutenant General Singh, amidst military traditions, marched to the cenotaph and saluted it after placing the floral wreath.

Major General Dewan Rabindranath Soni, Operations Officer, Southern Command Headquarters in the delegation followed suit and paid his respect afterwards.

The brief ceremony culminated after both military leaders signed the VIP book for condolences and memories at the venue. 

During IPKF operations against LTTE terrorism in Sri Lanka in the period between 1987 - 1990, a total of 1138 Indian Army personnel laid their lives in the north and east while fighting. Similarly, 2762 IPKF soldiers sustained injuries. 

Senior officers, Defence Attaches and other invitees were present during the event.
