Haiti-based Sri Lankan troops (SRIBAT) serving the MINUSTAH, the UN Peacekeeping Mission accorded a Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour to their visiting Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Wednesday (21) upon his arrival at the SRIBAT Headquarters in Leogane.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya welcomed by the SRIBAT Commander, Colonel Jaliya Senaratne, as the first leg of the day’s itinerary inspected the Guard Turnout, and received the salute of the Guard of Honour before he was invited to plant a tree sapling at the SRIBAT Headquarters premises as a symbol of memory.

Minutes after his arrival, the SRIBAT Commander presented him with a detailed account of SRIBAT deployments and various operational duties in the country soon after all senior staff officers were introduced to their visiting chief.

The next moment assumed greater significance as the visiting Commander took the podium before an assembly of SRIBAT troops in order to deliver them a special address.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in his brief address reminded SRIBAT troops of the importance of maintaining the highest degree of discipline during operational duties at all times since any reputation for the SRIBAT means a special recognition of the country’s military service, no matter where they would serve.

To assess and see for himself how the SRIBAT Headquarters runs, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, accompanied by Brigadier Nirmal Dharmaratne, Director Operations, Army Headquarters and the SRIBAT Commander, conducted an inspection tour round the Headquarters premises.

During the tour the visiting Commander did not forget to speak to SRIBAT personnel receiving treatment at the medical unit in Leogane. The Commander also made inquiries about varieties of facilities and food items generally made available to SRIBAT troops.

Afterwards, the Commander added a monumental dimension to his visit to Haiti after posing for a group photograph with SRIBAT troops at the request of the SRIBAT Commander since it would serve a lifetime memory for all of them. SRIBAT Commander further signified the visit of the Commander of the Army by presenting him with a special token of memory before his exit from the SRIBAT Headquarters.

Meanwhile, two Sri Lankan professionals, Mr Madura, UN Regional Headquarters Engineer, Leogane and Mr Mohan, ICRC official, Leogane took time off from their assignments to offer their greetings to the visiting Commander of the Army, just before the Commander moved out from the Headquarters complex.

Later on, with the intention of receiving a first-hand experience of the ground realities, the Commander visited the Headquarters of a Company deployment at peripheral level in Petit Goave Sector and exchanged views with its Company Commander and other Army personnel serving the detachment.

Towards the latter part of his day’s itinerary, the Commander visited one more Company Headquarters in Jacmel area, the most distant SRIBAT unit away from Leogane, and inspected the premises before he offered his greetings to the troops serving there in a brief address.
