VIR Novice Boxers Show Colours in 2018 Inter-Regiment Finals

The Inter-Regiment Novices Boxing Championship-2018, organized by the Army Boxing Committee came to a close at Panagoda Army Gymnasium on Friday (23).

The four-day (March 20-23) tournament, competed by 101 novice boxers from 14 regiments under 10 weight categories who vied for supremacy in the tournament that provided a fillip to the budding boxers in the Army had the finals on Friday (23).

The final tussle for championship was witnessed by Major General Rukmal Dias, Chairman, Army Boxing Committee and Commander, Security Forces – Central who himself has been a veteran in boxing. He graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and distributed prizes and awards to the achievers.

Boxers of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) carried away the trophy in the tournament after a close encounter. The Gajaba Regiment (GR) and Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) emerged as co-runners up while Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) secured the third place. Trophies to the winners were given away by the Chief Guest.

Lance Corporal R.U Rajpaksha of the MIR was adjudged the Best Boxer in the tournament.

Major General Rukmal Dias, Chairman, Army Boxing Committee showing a keen interest witnessed the final encounter, together with a large gathering of Senior Officers and boxing-lovers.
