VIJAYABAHU AND ARMY SERVICE CORPS TEAMS EMERGE VICTORIOUS

The tussle for Championship Trophy in the Inter-Regiment 2002 Volleyball tournament for A & B divisions of the Sri Lanka Army, held at Sugathadasa Indoor stadium on Tuesday (11), saw the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (A) division and Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (B) division giving a tough time to the Sri Lanka Artillery team and Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps team who finally ended up as Runners-up in both tournaments.

Major General L. C. R Goonawardene RSP USP ndc IG, Chief of Staff, who witnessed the tournament as Chief Guest gave away trophies and shields to the winners.

Lance Corporal D.M. C. P Dissanayake (SLASC) who did an excellent performance, was adjudged the Best Player of the A-division.

During the encounter of the A division, both Lance Corporals R. A. S. P Rajapakse and M. L Abeyratne from Sri Lanka Army Service Corps were adjudged Best server and Best receiver respectively since they emerged outstanding, offering stiff resistance to their rivals. Scores stood as 25/12, 25/15 and 25/16 as the match drew to an end.

Sri Lanka Artillery (Runners-up) fought hard amidst cheering and thundering applause from sports enthusiastswho gathered at the stadium. Gajaba Regiment team became third in the encounter.

Similarly, merits for the Best setter, Best attacker/dasher and Best player were grabbed respectively by Private C. S Liyanage, Staff sergeant E.M.L.C Ekanayake and Lance Corporal D. M. C. P Dissanayake of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps but the trophy for the Best fielder went to Gunner M. P. P Saman Kumara of the Sri Lanka Artillery.

The Championship trophy in the B division tournament was won by Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) but second and third places were secured by Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) and Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) teams. Trophies and shields for Special Performances went to Private A. M. Mohan Sanjeewa (SLAGSC) (Best server), Private Sanjeewa Imbulana (VIR) (Best receiver), Private Sanjeewa Imbulana (VIR) (Best fielder), Private Shantha Sandaruwan (VIR) (Best setter) and Private Indika Nirmala (VIR) (Best attacker/dasher). Private Mahinda Chandrasekera (VIR) was adjudged the Best Player. Final score board stood 25/17, 25/22 and 25/23.
