Award of the remainder of Gallantry Medals to 2170 War Heroes who actively contributed to the success of humanitarian operations before May 2009, got underway Thursday (25) morning at Panagoda Army Cantonment premises during a fitting ceremony, headed by General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army.
The event refreshed the memories of invaluable dedication, commitment and sacrifice, made by 19,158 War Heroes of the Armed Forces during Humanitarian Operations in the North and East by awarding prestigious Gallantry Medals, Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya (WWV) and Rana Wickrema Padakkama (RWP). Earlier, HE the President at the inaugural investiture ceremony presented those medals to a representative group of 216 officers at Temple Trees.
Thursday’s (25) award of those medals at Panagoda included 03 Weerodara Vibhushanaya (WV) Medals, 99 Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya (WWV) Medals and 2066 Rana Wickrema Padakkama (RWP) Medals.
Chief Guest, General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army symbolically pinned 9 WWV, 3 WV and 53 RWP Medals during the first segment of the ceremony. All other Colonels of Regiments of respective recipients followed suit and continued awarding the remainder of medals as the ceremony got underway.
A total of 156 Gallantry Medals of Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya (WWV), 2232 of Rana Wickrema Padakkama (RWP) and 16,770 of Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) were to be awarded to War Heroes of the tri-services during separate ceremonies.
A large gathering of spouses, children, parents and relatives of fallen War Heroes, disable War Heroes and several invitees were present.
Major General Crishantha de Silva, Commander, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Major General R.M.D Ratnayake, Chief of Staff and senior officers took part in medal awarding to the War Heroes during the ceremony.
