UPDATE: Troops Continue Humanitarian Services for Flood Victims

The Army-initiated rescue, search and relief operations, being conducted across the country in flood-affected areas are continuing although flood threats are fast dwindling, latest reports reaching from different Security Force Headquarters confirmed.       

As per instructions of the Commander of the Army, troops are engaged in multifarious projects in close cooperation with state authorities and other agencies.   

Troops of the 663 Brigade of the 66 Division under the Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN), in liaison with Divisional Secretariat officials on the directions of the General Officer Commanding of the 66 Division supported the distribution of relief parcels, inclusive of clothes, water bottles, dry rations, sanitary items and other daily needs to the flood victims in Pooneryn during two  brief programmes, held at Paranthan Hindu Maha Vidyalaya and Mahadeva Child Home in Kilinochchi on Thursday (26).

Sponsored by Union Mission Trust Institute in Colombo, 74 families and 400 children received those essentials during the arrangement organized by the 663 Brigade troops and civil authorities. Those displaced victims are housed in these two places and those families are provided their basic needs by the government and various other agencies.

Similarly, troops of the 8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry serving the 141 Brigade of the 14 Division of the Security Force Headquarters- West (SFHQ-West) for the 10th consecutive day went on providing cooked meals packets, clothes, sanitary items and all other emergency needs to the flood-affected civilians in Biyagama and the outskirts on Wednesday (25).

Similarly, Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) personnel during the catastrophe were at the fore-front of providing relief to the flood-affected people in Colombo and elsewhere in the region. They hurriedly provided security to the troops at work and evacuated hundreds of victims with the help of other members of the Army. Similarly, those SLCMP personnel provided their vehicles for carrying of the sick and the feeble to safer areas.     

On Wednesday (24), troops of the SFHQ – Central,  together with members of the ’Kandy Off Road and Adventure’ Club distributed dry rations to the flood affected people in Berawila displaced Centre with the participation of the Commander, Security Forces-Central ( SF- C).

Meanwhile, the troops of 2 Rifle Corps serving the same SF Headquarters gave their support during a distribution of relief items for the displaced in Patithalawa School, Berawila School, Beravila Temple Apple Estate, Community Hall and Lokananda Temple. The Cinnamon Garden Institution sponsored those relief items which were given away on Wednesday (25).

Meanwhile, 22 Sri Lanka National Guard troops of the SFHQ – C renovated the damaged tank bund at Ruvanpura in the Ruvanpura Grama Seva Division on 24 May since the tank began to spill waters across the damaged bund as the water levels increased.

Religious Leaders, Senior Army Officers , State Officials, Beneficiaries, and a large gathering of   civilians including children, supported and participated in those programmes.
