Venerable Galaboda Gnanissara Nayaka Thero (Podi Hamuduruwo) at Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple Friday (20) afternoon handed over a large consignment of dry rations, vegetables, medicines, clothes, powdered milk packets, building materials and essentials to the Secretary Defence Eng Karunasena Hettiarachchi and the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva for distribution among flood victims.
Gangaramaya as the most leading Buddhist temple in Colombo has collected those items from donors and devotees who were to launch different charity programmes on account of Vesak and also from various other private agencies, companies, banks, volunteer organizations, etc.
The consignment of relief items is meant for distribution by all three services Army, Navy and Air Force.
Ven Gnanissara Nayaka Thero, together with Dr Kirinde Assaji Thero, Deputy Incumbent at Gangaramaya symbolically handed over the consignment to the Ministry of Defence and the Army in the presence of Minister, Hon Sagala Ratnayake, State Minister of Defence, Hon Ruwan Wijewardene, Chief of Defence Staff, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Inspector General of Police, Mr Sirisena Kumarasinghe, Chairman, Sri Lanka Telecom, and a gathering of donor representatives.
Ven Gnanissara Nayaka Thero delivered a brief oration and thanked the donors for their considerateness when thousands of our countrymen remain affected in a natural disaster.
