THE HOSTAGE –taking drama that is taking place in the Wanni today, is one of the worst episodes of hostage –taking in history. The tragic irony is that the so called protectors and those claiming to represent the Tamil community are the perpetrators of the hostage drama! It is abundantly clear to all except the frenetically energized Diaspora and their deaf, dumb and blind, inveterate sympathizers in the West that Prabhakaran’s day is over and the latter knows it. He is clutching on to the last tenuous straw of shamelessly hiding behind Tamil civilians and praying for a miracle to be pulled off by his strident supporters enabling him to slip through the ever tightening grip of the Security Forces.
What is galling is that Prabhakaran still has a few asinine popinjays like Hillary, Milliband and Kouchner, who are virtually encouraging him to hold fast till they try all their pathetically devious ploys to extricate him from the quicksand morass he is neck deep in. The editor of the prestigious U.S. broadsheet the Washington Times has recently, in a fine leading article, candidly exposed the crass and shameful hypocrisy of no less a person than Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of Defence, on the hostage-taking drama unfolding in Sri Lanka.
While the UN itself has acknowledged that Prabhakaran the hostage taker should do well to release the civilians and surrender, these misguided sympathizers of the deadliest terrorist in the world are mouthing incoherent inanities and bringing up irrelevant humanitarian issues which are totally extraneous to the hostage crisis in hand, to give the terrorist a new lease of life.Their logic is fuzzy to the point of being incomprehensible and even bordering on the insane!
What these characters with their misplaced sympathy should bear in mind at this stage is the United Nations resolution 638 on hostage-taking passed by the Security Council in 1989, which spells out clearly the position the international community should take in a hostage–taking crisis. The resolution is reproduced below.
1) Condemns unequivocally all acts of hostage –taking and abduction.
2) Demands the immediate safe release of all hostages and abducted persons, wherever and by whomever they are being held.
3) Calls upon all States to use their political influence in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law to secure the safe release of all hostages and abducted persons and to prevent the commission of acts of hostage-taking and abduction."
These Western sympathizers of Prabhakaran seem to have taken leave of their senses to protect a hostage taker who has cruelly let down the community he had sworn to protect in a desperate bid to save his own skin.
