UN Medal Parade in Lebanon Honours Sri Lankan Troops

The customary prestigious military ceremony that awards UN Medals to the 150-strong Sri Lankan Force Protecting Company (SLFP-Coy) serving the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) took place in Lebanon on Monday (26) morning with the participation of the visiting Army Commander as Chief Guest.

The much-awaited UN Medal Parade that generally appreciates and recognizes exemplary contribution by any specific contingent in UNIFIL saw its Sri Lankan contingent accord a salute to their visiting Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya soon after he was welcomed by the SLFP-Coy Commander in Lebanon upon arrival. A military Guard Turnout greeted the Chief Guest at the entrance to the SLFP-Coy complex before he was conducted to take the salute.

The Sri Lankan contingent with 10 officers and 140 Other Ranks, except for their primary tasks of Force Protection duties carries out a variety of other duties that cover Escorts, VIP protection, Detection of Explosives, Guards of Honour, etc.

The Sri Lankan Army Chief pinned the first memorable UN Medal on the contingent Commander, followed by the Force Commander Major General Alberto A. Cuevas who graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.

Towards the end of the military segment of the ceremony, Sri Lankan troops added thrill and excitement by presenting a show of explosive detecting sniffer dogs and a separate physical training (PT) display. Both displays impressed the spectators drawing roars of applause from the invitees.

A fellow-lunch hosted by the SLFP-Coy at Sri Lankan Base (SRI Base) culminated the day’s events.
