9 Sri Lanka National Guard (9 SLNG) troops of the 681 Infantry Brigade under the 68 Infantry Division of the Security Force HQ - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) adding their share to the Army's ongoing house construction for the underprivileged in the North erected a new home for a needy family residing in Udayarkattu and handed over its keys to the beneficiaries during a brief ceremony on Friday (July 21).
Major General M.K Jayawardena RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces-MLT attended as the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony. The project was made possible with monetary assistance to the value of Rs. 2 m provided jointly by Mr S. Punidawalan residing at Anandapuram and Mr M.B Anton in Walaimadam through the Army-initiated coordination as a symbol of goodwill.
The beneficiary Mr Wijayakumar Danushan, a labourer who is married and blessed with one daughter residing at Suthathipuram Colony, Udayarkattu was undergoing economic hardships and was without a proper shelter. He was living in a small hut, simply covered with tin plates when the troops spotted the plight of the family.
Soon after their desperate living condition was brought to the notice of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 68 Infantry Division, Major General S. Kasturimudali RSP ndc psc, prompt action was taken to screen donors in search of raw materials for construction of a house to the deserving family. The project was completed within two months after donors supplied necessary resources and raw materials.
Troops of the 9 Sri Lanka National Guard (9 SLNG) using their technical and engineering expertise erected the new house for the deserving family. A simple religious ceremony saw the keys of the new house were delivered after unveiling a plaque and cutting a ribbon.
Assistant Divisional Secretary of Udayarkattu, state officials, the GOC of 68 Infantry Division, Commander of the 681 Infantry Brigade, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, relatives and civilians in the area also took part in the event.
