Two New Houses Gifted to Two Army Sportsmen for Outstanding Achievements

Two Army sportsmen of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) who brought international reputation to the Army and the country alike became the recipients of two new houses, gifted by the Army on Wednesday (24), following personal initiatives taken by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva and their Regiment.

Both Warrant Officer II, U. Pradeep Sanjaya of 4 SLSR, a para athlete from Divuldeniya, Mirigama and Corporal W.L Gunasekara of 12 SLSR, a Wushu player from Hindagolla, Kurunegala won Bronze medals in the 400 m event in Paralympics in London (2012) and the World Wushu Championship in Malaysia (2013) respectively.

Construction of these two houses began last year on the instructions of the former Commander of the Army and the Colonel of the Regiment, SLSR after the SLSR Regimental Headquarters pledged to bear the cost of these two houses and provide necessary manpower for construction work.  

Wednesday’s house-warming ceremonies at Divuldeniya, Mirigama and Hindagolla, Kurunegala, graced by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva as the Chief Guest, took place separately, giving pride of place to religious ceremonies.

As the auspicious minute struck, the Commander handed over the keys of the main door to WO II, U. Pradeep Sanjaya and entered the new house together with the beneficiary and his family members where traditional milk boiling ritual took place as a symbol of prosperity.

Just two hours after the house warming at Mirigama, the Commander arrived at Hindagolla, Kurunegala where the house warming ceremony of Corporal W.L Gunasekara got underway amidst religious ceremonies.

Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva presented the keys of the new house to the recipient and wished him and his family good luck on the same occasion. Amid chanting of Seth Pirith, house warming took place in accordance with ancient traditions.

On both occasions, the Commander extending his best wishes gave away two gift parcels to the beneficiaries as tokens of his appreciation.

Both ceremonies were attended by Major General Boniface Perera, Colonel of the Regiment SLSR, Brigadier B.A.L Ratnayake, SLSR Centre Commandant, Brigadier Athula Galagamage, Director Sports, senior officers and other ranks and a gathering of well-wishers and relatives.

WO II, U. Pradeep Sanjaya of 4 SLSR in December 2008 while engaged in fight against terrorism in Kilinochchi area sustained serious injuries after a terrorist mortar fire struck his left arm, compelling him to move out from the battlefield. Yet his interest in sports did not decline and continued to conduct practice his athletic skills. During 2008-2012, he succeeded in securing many trophies and shields to the Regiment and the Army at different national and military events. His apex achievement came about in 2012 at Paralympics in London when he won Bronze in 400 m marathon run after an absence of 12 years.   

Corporal W.L Gunasekara of 12 SLSR who had shown his colours in Wushu at Regimental and Defence Service levels reached his zenith in 2013 when he won a Bronze medal in the World Wushu Tournament - 2013 in Malaysia for the first time in the Army history.
