Religious observances of all major denominations became the order of the day for Jaffna based members of the Security Forces and civilians on 26th June when those perished in the tsunami catastrophe exactly six months ago were remembered and merits transferred.
The 51 Division in connection with the completion of the six-month period for tsunamis initiated a series of religious activities -Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic - in Jaffna peninsula under the guidance of Commander of Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna Major General S.D Tennakoon and other Senior Officers of all services and the Police.
All four religious observances, joined by many civilians were meant particularly to transfer merits to those perished in the tragedy, including members of the armed forces and the Police and also to invoke blessings on displaced tsunami victims, all Sri Lankans and the country at large.
A morning mass at CLR church at the weekend kicked off the day's programme with the participation of Catholic devotees in the services and members of the civil community, to be followed by Islamic prayer sessions at Navatturai Mosque around 1.30 p.m. the same day. The special Pooja at famed Nallur Hindu Temple at 6.30 p.m. attracted many devotees who lost their beloved ones in the tragedy. The last leg of the day's programme ended with a Bodhi Pooja held at Sri Nagavihara temple premises in Jaffna. It was graced by none other than 51 Divisional Commander, Brigadier P Pannipitiya and other Senior Officers including the Brigade Commander for 512 Brigade.
