'Tsunami Preparedness' Workshops Launched with DMC & Troops' Support

Army personnel of the 61 Infantry Division, including the Civil Affairs Officer of the 61 Infantry Division and the Commanding Officer of 14 (V) Battalion Gemunu Watch, contributed their assistance to the conduct of a workshop on 'Tsunami Preparedness', launched by the Disaster Management Center (DMC) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The awareness project, launched at Anuladevi Girls' School in Magalla on Friday (24) on a suggestion, made by the the DMC, Commander Security Forces-West and the General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division was attended by around 1800 students, school staff, parents and local residents.

It included theoretical as well as practical (mock drills) along the high tsunami risk coastal belt areas in Galle. The Assistant Director of the District Disaster Management Coordinating Unit (DDMCU), District Secretary, Galle, government officials and Grama Seva officials participated in this awareness programme.

In the most recent past, the same DMC workshop with Army personnel was also held during 1-3 March 2023 with the participation of around 1000 students of Kumara Kashyapa Kanishta Vidyalaya, Madampagama and Madampa Maha Vidyalaya schools, Madampagama.
