Troops Still Continuing Search & Rescue Operations in Affected Areas

8 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops under command to the 611 Brigade of the 61 Division under the Security Force HQ - West rushed this morning (5) to Dewanagala, Mawanella area to rescue a family, affected by earthslips and torrential rains.

Troops trekked along the affected areas, clearing obstacles on their way amidst torrential rains and found a 23-year old young woman, buried and dead in a mound of earth and took her to the closest Mawanella Hospital.

Still troops are continuing their search & rescue missions in and around the area, affected by the earthslip to find her missing mother (56), father (57) and the brother (29) and are still attending to those emergencies in coordination with villagers.

In the meantime, 8 SLSR troops moved to provide relief to one more house, affected due to a minor landslide in Warakapola, Algama area this morning (5). There they recovered the dead body of a 70-year old male under a mound of earth and the remains were sent to the Warakapola Hospital. Remaining members of the family were sent to a safe place with the coordination of the government authorities in the area.

On directions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander Security Forces - West, Major General Dammi Hewage, General Officer Commanding 61 Division, Brigader Janaka Udowita, Commander, 611 Brigade and Commanding Officer, 8 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment closely supervised the troops during these search & rescue missions.
