Troops on Standby Stack Sand Bags Atop Nilwala River Bank

Sri Lanka Army troops in cooperation with Disaster Management Centre, Navy, Air Force, Police and other voluntary organizations on the directions of the Commander of the Army are on standby in the face of catastrophic flood situation developing in the Western and Southern Provinces as of Wednesday morning (25).

Accordingly, 58 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters - West has kept a total of 170 Army troops with Officers on standby at Akuressa Divisional Secretariat, Arampath Temple at Imbulgoda, Viharahena at Deniyaya, Kosmodara old hospital at Morawaka, Ratalankawa, Kamburupitiya HQ, Kiribatawila Temple at Baddegama, Neluwa Divisional Secretariat, Nagoda Divisional Secretariat, Imaduwa Viwekaramaya, Pitigala and several other vulnerable areas to meet with any emergency situation. Those standby teams have been equipped with 9 boats, 176 life-saving jackets, emergency ropes, canoes, etc for use, if any need arose in coordination with the Directorate of Operations at the Army Headquarters.

3 (V) Gemunu Watch and 14 (V) Gemunu Watch troops of the 581 Brigade, based in Matara and Galle districts on the instructions of Major General Mahinda Mudalige, Commander, Security Forces - West, Major General Jayantha Gunarathne, General Officer Commanding - 58 Division, 581 Brigade Commander, Commanding Officers of respective units, are currently engaged in those relief surveillance duties while being alert to the changing developments.

Late Tuesday (24), 3 (V) Gemunu Watch troops responded to a sudden development and rushed to the flood-affected Nadugala area, off Matara and took immediate steps to prevent any imminent burst of the Nilwala river bank by using an excavator and stacking as many sand bags as possible, atop the vulnerable patches on the river bank in consultation with Irrigation Department officials.

As ravaging and swelling waters began accumulating into the main river, along with receding waters, the whole region was threatened with a devastating flood unless the river bank was fortified.
