12 (V) Sri Lanka Artillery troops of the 541 Infantry Brigade of the 54 Infantry Division organized a friendly football tournament among local teams in the area on Sunday (March 26) at the Kaththalampiddi playground with the intention of uplifting harmony and comradeship between the troops and the villagers.
A total of 4 teams, representing Iluppukadawai, Anthonipuram and Kalliyadi areas participated in the tournament. Anthonipuram A and B teams finally qualified for the final tussle.
During the finals, Anthonipuram - A team won and clinched the championship after a tight encounter scoring 1-0 against Anthonipuram - B team.
Colonel Waruna Gamage, Commander, 541 Infantry Brigade witnessed the encounter as the chief guest and awarded certificates and trophies to the winners. Major A.A.S Amarathunga, Commanding Officer, 12 (V) SLA, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks and a large crowd of local spectators watched the final tussle.
Major General Champaka Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni and Major General Nalinda Niyangoda, General Officer Commanding, 54 Infantry Division gave their blessings to the event.
