PASSIKUDAH, one of the exotic and picturesque beaches that lies in Vandeloos Bay, closed to Kalkudah and Valaichchena in the East is fast resurrecting and returning to its past popularity.
The victory over LTTE terrorism has given this boost to the area as more and more local and foreign tourists are thronging to enjoy a dip in the scenic sea water and a sun-bath on the golden beaches.
The other side of the story is rather discouraging. The fast increasing numbers of tourists to this natural mass of land seldom bother about environmental pollution that follows when they litter the area with no regard to bio-diversity. Even local authorities in the area find it difficult to cope with this situation.
In view of the gravity of the fast rising menace, Army troops in the area took an initiative to clean the beach surroundings with the assistance of about 700 employees of Orient Apparels of Naula who were touring the area recently. They put up several public billboards urging the public not to pollute the area and also went on placing some garbage collecting baskets along the beach.
