A total of 90 troops of the 18 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment serving the 241 Infantry Brigade under the 24 Infantry Division adding their contribution to the environmental conservation concerns launched a mammoth beach cleaning programme along the Kalmunai beach patch with civilians on Friday (14 July).
Discarded wrappers, plastic bottles, polythene and other pollutants causing environmental pollution in the beautiful coastal belt in Kalmunai remained a real eyesore to the visitors when the troops under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding, 24 Infantry Division Major General W. Chandrasiri RSP USP psc took the initiative in this connection.
The Commander, 241 Infantry Brigade, Colonel L.S.D.N Pathirathna RSP USP coordinated the beach cleaning project that began early in the morning and continued for about three hours. About 60 beach-loving civilians joined hands with the troops for the project.
General Officer Commanding, 24 Infantry Division and Commander, 241 Infantry Brigade also joined the troops for cleaning.
