A group of 10 students, aged between 16 and 17 years, from a prominent school in the Colombo area, were rescued by the troops of 111 Infantry Brigade on 04 December 2024, after getting stranded in the Hantana mountain range. The students, who had traveled to Kandy for a trip, were found in a precarious situation when one of them sustained a leg injury while exploring an unsafe area. The challenging foggy conditions further exacerbated their situation, making navigation difficult and leaving them stranded with no clear way to return.
Upon being notified, Army personnel from the 111 Infantry Brigade and the 2 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment safely rescued the group. The operation began around 8:00 PM and by early morning, the troops successfully brought the students down to safety.
