Trincomalee Sinhalese, Tamils &;amp; Muslims Together Compete in Football Tournament

WITH THE ERADICATION of the 30 year long terrorism, the Trincomalee District in the Eastern Province is undergoing rapid development, not only in infrastructure but also in the field of sports.   
 
The finals of Trincomalee District Football Tournament, sponsored by National Lottery Board and organized jointly by Army’s 22 Division and Trincomalee District Football League, were competed by 24 Football teams before the finals on March 28th.   

All football players of three major ethnicities,    Tamil and Muslim communities in the district gave the start to the tournament early in September after conduct of a training workshop for players with the support of Ministry of Sports and Sri Lanka Football Federation.

Eastern Eagle Sports Club, Jamaliya Sports Club, Olympic Sports Club and Big Foot Sports Club finally competed for the final round on March, 28th at Trincomalee Macheisher Stadium.

Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama, Governor for the Eastern Province graced the occasion as Chief Guest during the award distribution ceremony. The winner in the tournament, Eastern Eagle Sports Club received Rs 50,000/= in cash plus the Trophy of the Eastern Governor. The runners-up, Jamaliya Sports Club received Rs 25,000/= plus the Trophy of the Trincomalee District Football League.       

 Prior to the conduct of the tournament, players from all 24 teams, selected for this tournament were given away sports goods as donations. A pre training session was conducted by the veteran football coach in Sri Lanka, Mr. P.D Sirisena.  One hundred footballs were also distributed among football clubs in the district as tokens of encouragement.
