With the intention of empowering women to eke out a living, a team of lady officers from 7 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) conducted a training session for Jaffna women on production of hand bags, using local raw materials on Monday (23).
The training programme, initiated by 7 SLAWC on the directions of the Commander, Security Force Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J), took place at the Vasavillan Madhya Maha Vidyalayam, Jaffna to coincide with the World’s Widows’ Day.
36 widows in Jaffna and 33 widows from the south of Sri Lanka joined the training as a gesture of reconciliation and promotion of goodwill and understanding.
A team of lady officers, led by Major Chandrika Rajaguru, Commanding Officer, 7 SLAWC, was assisted by Ms Kamala Lojini, District Coordinator for Women’s Development in Jaffna who presented a lecture and practical sessions to the attendees.
Ms Kanthi Kesu Pushpakala of Meesalai East, Ms Christy Kaushalya of Nallur and Ms W.M Ranmenike of Dambulla also shared their experiences and views on making such hand bags for sale.
