On the guidelines given by Major General Upali Gunasekera, General Officer Commanding of the 62 Division, the 623 Brigade Commander, Brigadier Rohan Medagoda instructed the Commanding Officer of the 11 Gemunu Watch (GW), Lieutenant Colonel P.Karunaratne to immediately dispatch a team and renovate a water leakage on the Weherathenna Tank bund after swelling rainy water levels recently threatened the tank bund with a major split.
Accordingly, 11 GW troops in the presence of respective Irrigation Department officials patched up the vulnerable spots with the support of villagers in the area. Major General Champaka Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Forces-Wanni was informed of the emergency need.
The farming villagers in the sector ‘L’ of the Mahaweli Zone enthusiastically joined hands with the troops to carry out emergency repairs using sandbags and soil heaps.
