'Thripitakabhivandana' Special Project at Panagoda Draws Hundreds

Hundreds of Officers and Other Rankers serving the Army Headquarters and all formations in the Western Province this morning (22) participated in a mammoth 'Thripitakabhivandana' religious programme, held at Panagoda Sri Bodhirajaramaya Army Temple premises, organized by the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) and the Army Buddhist Association on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

The day’s programme organized under the guidance of Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces - West (SF-West) began with reading of the pledge on the importance of the ‘Thripitakaya’ as a World Heritage as declared by the UNESCO.

“We hereby declare that the ‘Thripitaka’ Sri Saddharma cannons which chronicle pristine teachings of the Buddha that was preached some 2600 years in Bharatha, accurately perused in 6 Dharma discourses and closely treasured by members of the Maha Sangha for generations at the risk of their lives would be conserved further in future as a World Heritage by all of us with dedication, honour, cooperation and dignity,” the special oath read.

Ven Bambarande Vajirananda Thero, Chief Incumbent at Pannipitiya Brahkmanagama Kande Vihara in a special Dhamma oration on the occasion highlighted the importance of the ‘Thripitakaya’ and its recognition as a World Heritage. A few minutes after his oration, Professor Hasantha Samarasingha, a visiting lecturer at the University of Jayewardenepura & Manelwatta Naganannda Centre of Buddhist studies delivered a talk on the comprehensive historical perspective of the ‘Thripitaka’.
