Three Reverse Osmosis Plants to Prevent CKD in Wanni Established

Inauguration of 3 Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants, erected by Wanni Army troops and sponsored by EAP Media Network Ltd as a viable alternative to get rid of arsenic in drinking water, took place on Sunday (12) at Ethawetunuwewa, Veherathenna and Bogaswewa areas in Vavuniya under the guidance of the Presidential Task Force for Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). 

HE the President Maithripala Sirisena, the prime mover behind the launch of the fight against this non-transitive disease, (CKD) which badly affects a large population in the Wanni as the Chief Guest, declared opened the first RO plant in the Bogaswewa resettled village area.

The RO plant passes drinking water through the osmotic pressure and special membranes and filters water to be rid of poisonous elements and the project has been recommended as an alternative solution to fast increasing incidents of CKD.

Two more RO plants, established in   Ethawetunuwewa and Veherathenna areas were also invested in the villagers around the same time after Hon Gayantha Karunathilake, Minister of Media, unveiled a plaque at the invitation of the Directors of the EAP Media Network Ltd.  

Each RO plant costs Rs 25 m and all three plants were built by the troops of the Sri Lanka Engineers and Corps of Engineer Services working under the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W).

Eng Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Secretary Defence, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander, SF-W Major General Boniface Perera, officials of the Presidential Task Force, Directors and staff members of the EAP Media Network Ltd, District Secretary for Vavuniya, local politicians and a gathering of contributors to the project were present during the inaugural ceremonies.

President Maithripala Sirisena after opening the RO plant at Bogaswewa addressed the beneficiaries and the gathering where he underlined the need to eradicate the CKD from the entire North Central Province and the Northern Province with the help of the new technology and the Presidential Task Force. He also recalled various measures that were proposed during his tenure as the Minister of Health under the previous government. President Sirisena also lavishly thanked the sponsors for their generosity.   

The brief ceremony culminated with a special vote of thanks.
