SECURITY Forces Headquarters, Jaffna in order to go hand in hand with ongoing normalization of the living milieu in the Jaffna peninsula are doing their utmost to make living worth there by relaxing more and more security measures.
The latest noteworthy step came about a few days ago when the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J) after dismantling their High Security Zone (HSZ) in the Valikamam north, Thellippalai area facilitated the re-function of the Thellippalai District Hospital for public use on the instructions of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander Security Forces, Jaffna after an absence of 20 years. The opening took place after Hindu religious rites were performed and lighting of the traditional oil lamp.
The function of the re-opened Thellippalai District Hospital began with the service being provided by 10 Medical Officers, 26 Nurses and 8 assistants. The hospital with 10 wards is able to accommodate 350 inmates. However, the G.G. Ponnampalam Cancer Treatment Centre, housed in the same compound continued to serve uninterruptedly in the past as the SFHQ-J had facilitated its run.
This newly re-opened District Hospital has five modern Medical Officer quarters and Nurses’ quarters for 25 personnel along with two ambulances. SFHQ-J in consultation with Ministry of Health and provincial health authorities took all necessary steps to have the hospital re-opened.
This hospital with separate units for various clinical services had to be abruptly closed down when LTTE terrorism was reaching its peak in 1989 with its series of continuous attacks on the Security Forces and civilians. As a result, the area surrounding the Security Forces Headquarters was declared a HSZ requesting all public services to move out until further notice.
Mr K. Ganesh, District Secretary for Jaffna, Regional Health Directors, Senior Army Officers and several others took part in the re-opening ceremony.
Afterwards, Jaffna Commander attended a special Pooja at Mawadipuram Hindu temple and received blessings. He also inspected improvements, needed to be done on temple infrastructure for devotees coming to worship the temple. The Jaffna Commander was accompanied by Brigadier B.J.A.F. Rodrigo the Chief of Staff Brigadier at SFHQ Jaffna.
