WELIOYA: NEW ROUNDS of heavy confrontations raging in the north of WELIOYA sector on Monday (7) captured terrorist trenches, smashed enemy bunkers and inflicted casualties.
Troops around Monday (7) noon launched an attack on one of enemy bunkers in the north of JANAKAPURA and captured it killing or injuring two terrorists. An immediate search into the trench made the troops recover one pouch, one cap, one polythene tent and one mammoty which have been left behind by Tiger terrorists.
At about 10.30 a.m. on Monday (7) troops confronted a gang of terrorists by opening fire towards them. Terrorists reacted to the fire using a mortar. One soldier sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Troops in the same above area captured one more terrorist trench line but the explosion of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) injured one soldier. Troop fire killed two terrorists and injured at least a few terrorists. Afterwards, troops traced seventy-six anti personnel mines and two used IEDs from the captured trench.
In the area north of KIRIIBBANWEWA a band of Tiger terrorists moving towards the south across a narrow jungle path were resisted by the troops at about 4.00 p.m. on Monday (7). Terrorist transmissions confirmed three of their female terrorists were injured in the troop fire. One valiant soldier received injuries in the clash.
A similar incident in another corner of KIRIIBBANWEWA at about 09.25 a.m. troops attacked an observation point of the terrorists. Terrorists reacted using heavy fire but the troops were able to overpower the enemy injuring at least four terrorists. A subsequent search around the targeted LTTE observation point recovered sixteen improvised plastic hand grenades, fifty ammunition rounds and a blood splattered polythene paper.
Meanwhile, troops observed an area ahead of them and learnt that Tiger terrorists were busy constructing their bunkers. Troops immediately jumped into action and directed artillery on the terrorist positions in order to destroy their work.
In the meantime, fighting troops eliminated three terrorists hiding in a secrete location close to another patch of KIRIIBBANWEWA and conducted a search in the same area where they saw blood stains around that location. Troops found one 28 liter can and several used food tins, left behind by Tigers.
A similar recovery in the north of JANAKAPURA around 3.40 p.m. bagged three hand grenades, six hundred ammunition rounds and sixty-three anti personnel mines that have been left behind by fleeing terrorists. Similarly, troops removed twenty four anti personnel mines from the same area.
During those clashes in WELIOYA, one brave soldier laid his life and three more were wounded.
