SVAB President's Presence Encourages 'Ranaviru Sevana' Visually-Handicapped Cricketers


The visually-handicapped cricketers of the Army Ranaviru Sevana during a tournament they played at Ratmalana School for the Blind and Deaf did well and received accolades on Friday (27).

Their encounter against the cricket team at the Ratmalana School for the Blind and Deaf became a reality, following a recent visit, made by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) who realized the extent of their cricket talents on inquiry.

Sri Lanka Army team of the Ranaviru Sevana beat its rival, cricket team of the Ratmalana School for the Deaf and Blind and recorded victory by 38 runs. It was a 40-40 over match.

It was the Army visually-handicapped cricket team which has claimed the Dilmah Championship Trophy since the year 2004 and the same team has represented Sri Lanka in India in the 20-20 cricket (2012) tournament, to raise the Sri Lankan team to the third rank in the world. However, these cricketers with the support of the SVAB were taken to participate in the Dilmah Championship Trophy tournament, was held at Shalika ground, Narahenpita on Friday (27).

Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake took time off Friday (27) morning at the commencement of the friendly match in order to encourage those visually-handicapped Army cricketers. Several Seva Vanitha senior members were also associated with Mrs Ratnayake’s visit to the playground to witness the cricket match.

The Army visually-handicapped cricket team, founded in 2001 at the Ragama Ranaviru Sevana, has been participating in several international cricket tournaments for the blind, securing leading places.
