THE INMATES at Ward 16, Mulleriyawa Mental Hospital are used to receive annual Christmas greetings by way of gift parcels, costumes, jewelry and a day of fun and entertainment, thanks to the initiatives taken by Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) ladies.
The practice became a reality this time too on 5th December when a team of SVAB ladies, led by Mrs Anusha Samarasinghe, Vice President SVAB and Lion Premanath de Soysa, President, 306-A Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Lions Club repeated the hospitality. Many Lions, Lion ladies, SVAB members and several Army officers on the project shared meals with Ward 16 inmates, interacted with them and enjoyed an exhibition of handicrafts prepared by resident patients themselves. SVAB members eagerly bought those exhibits and handed over the proceeds to the hospital authorities. Towards the end of the day’s programme, an Army music band added melodies and offered them singing opportunities.
The SVAB project, organized on the instructions of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President SVAB was supported by Mr Tilak, Mr Bandara and Mr Dayaratne of Kalubowila, Dehiwala Pavana Steel Hardware Stores who provided the entire stock of paint for complete re-painting to beds in the Ward 16.
In addition, Mr. Imesh Abeywickrama of Ceylinco Insurance Company Ltd gifted many sets of slippers for the use of Ward 16 inmates at the request of SVAB members. Festive spirits lasted throughout the whole day and SVAB members in cooperation with medical and nursing staff made the day an eventful one. The ward No 16 is maintained with the support given by the SVAB.
