The Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) spearheaded house construction project for War Hero families, including those still serving, continues to receive overwhelming public support, enabling the SVAB to further expand its welfare service.
On Wednesday (8), the SVAB saw one more new house constructed at Thalawa, Elpitiya on behalf of Rifleman S.M.N Suranjith of 14 Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) gifted to this War Hero who became disable due to injuries sustained during humanitarian operations. The house cost about Rs 1 million.
Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB whose initiatives resulted in the offer of this house was supported by SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit by donating cash for the construction.
The 40-perch plot of land for construction of the house was donated by Mr Lasantha Gunawardena, a Switzerland-based expatriate following coordination done by Ven. Elle Gunawansha Thero, incumbent, Dharmayathanaya, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Mr Chaminda Seyakkara, Chairman, Charvin Insurance Company assisted the project by sponsoring the cost of roofing sheets, donating Rs 50,000/=. Similarly, the SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit spent Rs 1 lakh for the construction.
Fellow soldiers of the SLSR joined hands together and offered their technical knowhow and labour towards erection of the house within a period of several months. Soon after the ceremonial opening Wednesday (8) morning, the recipient was gifted with several parcels, containing household accessories by both the SVAB and the SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit.
Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya at the invitation of Mrs. Renuka Perera, Chairperson, SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit and the former SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit Chairperson Mrs Rani Jayathilake unveiled a plaque and warmed the house after cutting a ribbon before the keys for the new house were symbolically handed over to the recipient amidst Seth Pirith chanted by members of the Maha Sangha.
