Stern Disciplinary Action to be Taken Against Army Wrongdoers in Norochcholai Incident

Media Release

Consequent upon investigations, conducted into the incident at Paniady, Norochcholai by the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) a few days ago where an Army Officer and a few soldiers were involved in a long-running personal dispute, the SLCMP upon completion of its Special Investigation Unit (SIU) inquiry proceedings handed over all Army personnel to the Norochcholai Police for onward action in full compliance with the civil law.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army on hearing of the involvement of Army personnel and subsequent arrest of a soldier on leave on Wednesday (30) wanted a full inquiry be conducted after dispatching a team of the SLCMP Special Investigation Unit to assist Norochcholai Police investigations since the Police were in the process of tracing whereabouts of the civilian mastermind and others, involved in the said incident.

The Army as per provisions would accordingly appoint a Court Martial against the conduct of those personnel in order to ascertain the course of disciplinary action that could be pursued against the said Officer and Other Ranks soon after they are released on bail from Court.

General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army has simultaneously instructed all relevant authoritative officers at the Army Headquarters to effect stern disciplinary action against all Army wrong-doers, irrespective of their rank or office. (Ends)
