Stage Set to Begin SLLI 'Paabala Melaa' at Hikkaduwa

Paabala Melaa’, the Sri Lanka Light Infantry’s (SLLI) Trade Fair and Carnival for fund-raising, will take place at Hikkaduwa public ground during Dec 19-23, beginning at 2.00 p.m. on all five days.

Paabala Melaa’ consists of trade stalls, children’s games, Army mini tattoos, musical shows, dancing features, circus shows, acrobatic displays, food courts and a multitude of different informative and entertaining commercial demonstrations, expects to raise much-needed funds to complete the SLLI war memorial under construction in Panagoda and further expand welfare roles for war-affected War Heroes and families of fallen SLLI War Heroes.

The event, a conceptual notion, proposed by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army who was the former Colonel of the Regiment, is being organized by Major General Amal Karunasekara, Colonel of the Regiment, SLLI with the support of all SLLI senior officers and other ranks.

A media briefing to this effect at Sri Lanka Electrical Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) headquarters officers’ mess on Wednesday (11), explained how the sequence of events in the ‘Paabala Melaa’ had been streamlined during all five days at Hikkaduwa.

Major General Karunasekara outlining the objective behind the conduct of the event, told the gathering that funds that would be collected are to be used primarily for completion of the SLLI War Hero monument, construction of two more new houses through the SLLI Seva Vanitha Unit and for supply of welfare relief to disable War Heroes, families of fallen War Heroes and other serving soldiers in general.

Popular music bands Flash Back, Bachi Susan with Fire, Seeduwa Sakura, City Creek and Marians are to add a big thrill on all five days respectively, together with a host of vocalists on each day during the ‘Paabala Melaa’ that would provide a novel experience to both locals and foreign tourists, visiting the famous Hikkaduwa holiday resort. Amali and Star Dance, Sensation, Omaya, Ranganavo and Rangeena dancing ensembles will dance to the melodies of the bands, adding colour and amusement on all five days.      

A mega ‘Paabala Melaa’ lottery draw is to gift a Dimo Batta lorry, a three-wheeler, a motorbike, an LED television, an air ticket to India plus 30 other consolation prizes to the winners against the Rs 100/= ticket bought for admission to the ‘Paabala Melaa’ premises.

The SLLI, the oldest regiment of the Army during the fight against terrorism and defence of the motherland, has carved a niche for itself as the wing that fought fearlessly at ground level, enabling all other troops to follow and fight against terrorists during humanitarian operations. A total of 3801 SLLI officers and other ranks laid their lives in the name of their motherland and the SLLI with this new War Hero cenotaph, plans to immortalize their memory, along with a brief description on each and every fallen War Hero.
