3 (Volunteer) Gemunu Watch soldiers in Matara, repeating their concerned commitment towards the common good of civilians, in another daring stunt, assisted the rescue of a drowning woman who had tried to take her own life by jumping into the Nilwala river on Thursday (23) at about 10.15 a.m.
Staff Sergeant W.T.A Chaminda while on duty, near the river bank in the heart of Matara town, suddenly observed the woman in question, jumping into Nilwala water from the bridge, and was being drifted towards a lonely fisherman’s canoe, fishing in the lower section of the river which was almost at spill levels, due to torrential rains.
The woman in question at the same time was desperately trying to cling to the fisherman’s canoe for survival, although the fisherman could not do much to save her life, all by himself. On seeing the dramatic development, Staff Sergeant Chaminda wasted no time, jumped off the bridge and swam towards the woman victim who was by then holding on to the canoe which was swinging dangerously after loss of its balance.
Swiftly acting, five more fellow-soldiers took another boat and hurriedly sailed towards the woman who was being assisted by both the Staff Sergeant and the fisherman, aboard the canoe at that crucial minute.
All attempts of the soldiers finally succeeded and enabled them to rescue the victim alive, and dispatch her to the Matara General Hospital for resuscitation while simultaneously keeping the Matara Police informed of the sequence of the episodes.
Staff Sergeant W.T.A Chaminda of 5 Sri Lanka Military Intelligence Corps (main assisting rescuer) and fellow-assistants, Private A.M. Mahesh Kumara (3 Gemunu Watch), Private N.H.K.S.C Lakmal (3 Gemunu Watch), Sapper W.C Kumara (10 Engineer Service Regiment), Sapper U.L Nanda Kumara (10 Engineer Service Regiment) and Sapper K.G Bandula (10 Engineer Service Regiment), actively took part in the mission.
Earlier too, Matara-based 3 (V) Gemunu Watch soldiers rescued the lives of two kids who were thrown into water by their father from the same place, for which they received laurels from the Commander of the Army who summoned them to the Army Headquarters for felicitation.
