Sri Lankan Troops in Lebanon Bring 'Vesak' Spirits to the Area

Sri Lanka’s 9th Army contingent serving the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) brought homely sentiments into their camp by commemorating the Vesak festival at Nequra camp, South Lebanon.

By erecting a colourful replica of a big Dagoba (pagoda) and several lanterns in the UNIFIL Sri Lanka Battalion (SRIBAT) camp on account of the Vesak commemoration, the troops received the attention of the people in the area.

On May 2, Vesak decorations were unveiled under the auspices of Ven. Morawatte Subodhi Thera, a resident monk in Lebanon, following coordination done by the Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Lebanon.

On the day of Vesak (3), all the lanterns were exposed to the public and several gifts were given away to the Army personnel in appreciation of their artistic craftsmanship in decorations they produced by the SRIBAT Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Prabath Kodithuwakku.

Those Vesak arrangements away from home were organized within a week after finding raw materials needed for those products.
