Sri Lankan Relief Contingent in Nepal Shares 'Vesak' Blessings with Victims

The Sri Lankan Army, Navy and Air Force troops, currently engaged in relief work in Nepal, on the sidelines of their humanitarian services, took time off to commemorate the ‘Thrice Blessed Day’ (Vesak) by organizing alms-giving and Dhamma sermon programmes in Dhyankutivihar of Banepa city on May 4, the day which Nepal commemorated Vesak.

Dhyankutivihar, which is situated between Dolalghat and Kathmandu, is well-known as a social service centre which provides shelter to many orphaned children.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva has been in constant touch with the relief contingent in order to find their requirements, if any.

In addition, the Sri Lankan contingent offered alms to the monks in Dhyankutivihar and offered Pirikara on the same occasion. Sri Lankan Engineer troops are simultaneously engaged in the restoration work of the same temple, affected by the earthquake.

“Our soldiers didn’t forget to make Vesak lanterns during their free time after engaging in relief assistance activities,” in charge of the Sri Lankan contingent, Major General Maithri Dias was quoted saying to the ‘Daily News’ newspaper.

Sri Lankan Armed Forces personnel in Dolalghat area had provided medical assistance to more than 2,600 patients by May 3. Soldiers of the Engineering Regiment of Sri Lanka Army successfully cleared roads blocked due to the earthquake.

They were able to reopen Sipaghat - Bimpur Road, Arniko Highway and Dholaghat - Saping road for public transport. Entrance of Bhagawati Hindu Temple of Palanchowk was also blocked and it was also cleared by the Armed Forces personnel.
