Sri Lanka-India bilateral ‘Exercise-Mithra Shakthi’, now an annual feature with the participation of Special Operation Forces (SOF) of both Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army is underway in the general area Aundh Military Station, Pune, India for two weeks.
Four officers and forty one Non-Commissioned Officers from Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment (SLLI) and the troops from Indian 2 MHARA Infantry Regiment are participating in this mutually worked-out approach for joint operations in a given setting.
The Exercise, designed by the Indian and Sri Lankan Armies to share knowledge and experience between SOF of both organizations, began its first one in India on 3 December 2012 and the 2nd Exercise was conducted at Uva-Kudaoya Commando Regiment Training School in November 2014.
The Exercise will further focus on improvement of the coherence, skills in planning, the method of Joint Forces Command and Control and cohesion, enhancement of ability to operate alongside between both sides in active operations, emphasis on high moral and combat qualities, physical conditioning, physical endurance and survival skills in the field.
The initial planning process was held in India attended by three senior officers of the Sri Lanka Army on the guidelines given by the Commander of the Army and the Directorate of Training at Army Headquarters.
Towards the end of the initial training schedule in India, plans are afoot to conduct the Exercise SARP VINASH for both Armies with the aim of conducting Joint Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) in the rural / semi urban terrain by the Joint Task Forces of both Armies.
A team of senior Sri Lanka Army Officers are scheduled to attend as observers during the final three days of the ‘Exercise-Mithra Shakthi’. During their stay, possibilities of launching a doctrine exchange programme, based on ‘Higher Defence Management Structure and Interface with Various Government Agencies’ are also to be explored.
