Sri Lanka Engineers Reaches Maturity, Marking 63rd Anniversary

Sri Lanka Army’s one of the most productive wings, the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), reached the milestone age of 63 years of committed service to the Nation on Sunday (09).

The series of ceremonies in connection with the 63rd anniversary, got to a start by placing floral wreaths before the Sappers’ Monument at the SLE Regimental Headquarters in a solemn ceremony, headed by Major General Udaya Nanayakkara, Colonel Commandant of the SLE on Friday (7).

Senior officers, members of the Regimental Council, Commanding Officers and Regimental Sergeant Majors followed suit, together with a representative team of over 630 family members of War Heroes who were present at the ceremony.

Rhythmic beats of war drums reverberated the Headquarters premises as the occasion became dignified and thoroughly solemn, befitting the grief and sorrow for the loss of their beloved ones.

A total of 24 officers and 646 other ranks of the SLE since the inception of the SLE, have laid their lives in defence of the territorial integrity of the country, and while some of them were engaged in other peripheral roles in the battlefield.

An all-night Pirith chanting ceremony, the same evening with the presence of serving and retired officers and other ranks as well as with members of bereaved families, invoked blessings on the SLE’s forward-march and merits on all fallen War Heroes.

A colourful Perahera carrying the sacred relic casket and the Piriwana Potha (book of religious stanzas), accompanied the members of the Maha Sangha for the chanting, followed by an alms-giving for 63 monks, to coincide with the 63rd anniversary.

On the day of the anniversary (Nov 9), the commemorative wreath-laying took place as mentioned above. On Monday (10), a ceremonial parade, comprised of 27 officers and 256 other ranks saluted the Colonel Commandant, Major General Udaya Nanayakkara in conformity with military traditions, following arrangements made at the parade ground.

A customary address to the parade afterwards by the Colonel Commandant at the occasion underlined the importance of invaluable services of the SLE and commended each and everyone for their commitment to the service, despite difficulties and setbacks.

Later on, the Colonel Commandant spoke to the members in the regimental council as well as all Senior Non Commissioned Officers at the Lieutenant General N.K.B Angammana Memorial Auditorium. A tea party plus an all rank lunch the same afternoon at the Sappers’ Mess brought the anniversary commemorations to an end.
