Sri Lanka Engineers Gets More Members Into Their Family

Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE), engaged in a number of giant renovation, de-mining work and development projects across the island, had more teeth on Wednesday (7) when the 33 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) was formally re-designated to be the 15 (volunteer) Sri Lanka Engineers of the Sri Lanka Army.

The re-designation as per instructions of the Commander of the Army was prompted as a result of the swelling demand of sappers for construction-related tasks at the ongoing Defence Headquarters Complex project at Akuregoda, Battaramulla.

A special parade to mark this important milestone got underway at the SLE Regimental parade ground where Major General V.U.B Nanayakkara, Director, Project Management Unit, Defence Headquarters Complex Project, was accorded a salute as the Chief Guest for the occasion.

A Guard Turn-Out at the entrance presented arms to the day’s Chief Guest after he was welcomed by senior officers. Minutes after the honours, Major General Nanayakkara and senior officers separately hoisted the Regiment and Unit flags and marked the formal start of the ceremony.

Adding colour to the event, a parade, comprising 33 Sri Lanka National Guard officers and other ranks symbolically, reported to the Chief Guest, pledging their willingness to wear badges and insignias of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers.

Major General Nanayakkara afterwards presented badges and insignias to all the officers and to a representative gathering of other ranks during the ceremony. Senior Regimental Sergeant Majors and senior Non Commissioned Officers of SLE meanwhile pinned the SLE badges on the rest of 33 SLNG soldiers awaiting the absorption to the new family of sappers.

A brief drill display showcased at the occasion testified to the skills of SLE troops who welcomed the youngest member to the family of sappers. A little later, the Chief Guest addressed the troops of newly-raised 15 (volunteer) SLE at Lieutenant General N.K.B Angammana Memorial Hall.

A group photo with officers and other ranks of the new members of the sappers towards the culmination of the event, immortalized the re-designation.
