Sri Lanka Army Marks International Mine Awareness Day with Educational Programmes

In line with the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action (04 April), the Sri Lanka Army conducted a series of awareness and educational programmes in selected areas, focusing on communities affected by past conflict.

The main event, conducted by the 10th Sri Lanka Engineers Regiment, educated 195 school children of J/Palali North G.T.M School on the dangers of landmines, anti-personnel mines, explosive remnants of war (ERW) and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

With decades of humanitarian demining experience, the Sri Lanka Army continues to play a leading role in mine clearance and victim assistance across the island. The programme included educational exhibitions, live demining demonstrations, and interactive sessions with school children, civil society groups and local authorities.

And also in a concerted effort to enhance community safety, nine field engineer demining teams, including women's corps demining team, conducted a comprehensive Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) program at Athawetunuwewa Vidyalaya.

The EORE initiative aimed to educate students and local residents about the dangers of explosive remnants of war (ERW) and to promote safe behaviors in areas potentially affected by such hazards. The program underscored the importance of recognizing and reporting suspicious objects, thereby minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.
